A study of ancient literature indicates that diabetes was fairly well known and well conceived as an entity in India. The nature has provided abundant plant wealth for all the living creatures, which possess medicinal virtues. Therefore, there is a necessity to explore their uses and to conduct Pharmacognostic and pharmacological studies to ascertain their therapeutic properties. In fact, nowadays diabetes is a global problem. Hence, the present study aims to open new avenues for the improvement of medicinal uses of Melhania futtyporensis Munro ex. for the area for diabetes. Another important objective of such study is to bring the anti-diabetic medicinal plants sector on a firm scientific footing, raise awareness and add value to the resource. Dried petroleum ether (60-80°C) extracts of leaves of Melhania futtyporensis Munro ex. were subjected for hypoglycemic activity in New Zealand rabbits (1.5-3.5 kg). Blood sugar level was determined using digital glucometer. The oral administration of leaf extracts at doses of 200 mg/ kg− lead to a significant blood glucose reduction. This laid the foundation to study the active compounds of such anti-diabetic plants that are responsible for the hypoglycemic activities. It also proves the traditional claim of Kachh region with regard to Melhania futtyporensis Munro ex. for its anti-diabetic activity....
The objective of the present investigation was to study the ameliorative effects of Metformin and Pioglitazone cardiovascular complications associated with type-2 diabetes mellitus. Fructose-fed (66 % solution, p.o.) diabetic rats were used as model of metabolic syndrome. Metformin (350 mg/kg, p.o.) and Pioglitazone (10 mg/kg, p.o.) were administered for a period of 6 weeks after induction of diabetes in fructose treated rats. The effects of drugs were examined on body weight, food and intake, serum glucose, triglyceride, cholesterol, insulin and blood pressure. The blood pressure was determined by invasive method and vascular reactivity was tested with Adrenaline, Noradrenaline and Phenylephrine at the end of the study. Acetylcholine-induced vasorelaxation was determined on isolated rat aortas and carotid wall thickness was measured. Results of the present study showed that body weight, serum glucose, triglyceride, cholesterol, insulin and blood pressure were increased in fructose fed rats. Long term treatment with Metformin and Pioglitazone significantly decreased weight gain, serum glucose, triglyceride, cholesterol and insulin levels in fructose fed rats. The treatments also significantly reduced elevated blood pressure and carotid artery wall thickness in fed hypertensive rats. Moreover the vascular reactivity to catecholamine’s and the endothelial functions were also normalized by the drugs. Taken together, Metformin and Pioglitazone both have cardiovascular protective effects in fructose-metabolic syndrome in rats. But comparatively Pioglitazone has better ameliorating potential than Metformin....
Serratia peptidase is an enzyme that finds a wide range of applications in Pharmaceutical industry, health care and Medicine etc. SERRATIA MARSCENES was isolated from oil rich soil and silk worm source and screened for the production of Serratia peptidase. Different nitrogen and carbon source like soya peptone, normal peptone, ammonium nitrate and ammonium sulphate, sugar, rice flour, mannitol, ragi flour were used in the production media. The maximum production was in the ammonium sulphate, sugar for MTCC culture and ammonium sulphate, rice flour for AZRM 1 culture containing media. The enzymes were purified to homogeneity by ammonium sulphate precipitation, acetone precipitation and ion exchange chromatography. Characterization studies showed optimum pH 7 and optimum temperature was 370C. The enzyme activity was increased by Magnesium chloride and inhibited by mercuric chloride. The molecular weight of the enzyme as determined by SDS-PAGE was found to be 50-55KDa. The anticoagulant property of the enzyme was also studied which gave delayed clotting time for blood samples. Preparations of proteolytic enzymes have been shown to be useful in cancer, digestion support, fibrocystic breast disease, food allergies, hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis), hepatitis C, herpes zoster (shingles), inflammation, sports injuries and trauma, pancreatic insufficiency, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis and other autoimmune disorders, sinusitis, asthma, bronchitis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease....
